9th September is known as Kiku no Sekku in Japan, or the Double Ninth Festival in English. The Double Ninth Festival is held to celebrate long life. There are a number of traditions associated with the festival from climbing mountians and drinking chrysanthemum liquor to visiting the graves of ancestors to pay respects by cleaning and repainting inscriptions, laying out food offerings for the deceased and burning incense sticks.
